AUGUST CALENDAR (Corrections and what is remaining)

Sunday August 20 from 8:30 until 3:00, water skiing and picnic lunch with the Golden Triangle Water Ski Club, no cost but signed waiver required, meet at The Steel City Rowing Club at 100 Arch St. in Verona to get a short pontoon boat ride to the island, make your reservation by August 14 with (CORRECTION): Nancy Leverett 412-561-3972. We do this activity along with Three Rivers Adaptive Sports, they have equipment that makes it possible to water ski with a physical disability, our members can and have used their equipment by completing a registration and waiver form due August 2017. You can find and download these forms by going on the internet to “2017 Allegheny River Rumble”.

Saturday, August 26 (correction of day of the week, but Aug 26 is accurate): Kayaking at North Park. Reserve with Tammi Swiantek, 412-488-6298, by August 15. We’ll meet at Kayak Pittsburgh, (North Park, 10301 Pearce Mill Road, Allison Park Pa 15101), at 9:30 so we can sign waivers and be on the water from 10 to 11. The cost will be $10 per participant due at the event. This cost includes boating, drinks, and a pizza lunch afterward. Regular canoes are available if preferred.

SEPTEMBER CALENDAR

Tuesday September 5 will be the next Board meeting from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at One Smithfield Street. All are welcome! Please contribute your ideas for future activities. To let Tammi know you will be there, call 412-488-6298 by 10 PM on the previous Sunday.

Wednesdays September 6 & 20: Mall Walking at the Monroeville Mall from 9 AM to 11 AM. To sign up with Joyce Driben by 9 PM the Thursdays before, call 412-521-4385.

Thursdays September 7 & 21: Mall Walking at the Ross Park Mall from 10 to 12 noon on both days.

To reserve for the 7th, call Pat DePasquale, 412-492-1692, by 9 PM on Sunday the 3rd. To sign up for Thursday the 21st, phone Toni Kelly, 412-965-4443, by 9pm on Sunday, September 17


Thursdays September 7, 14, 21 & 28: Yoga from 2:30 to 4 PM at Squirrel Hill's Schoolhouse Yoga Studio: 2215 Murray Ave. Copay is $10, or $15 if the group is very small. The sign-up deadline with Veronique Schreurs, 412-225-4038, is the Tuesdays before by 9pm

Friday, September 8, 2017 1:00 PM–3:00 PM Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, 4724 Baum Blvd, Pittsburgh 15213 Accessible Movie Afternoon: The Private Life of Deer, DVD, lasts 60 min.

Just a century ago, there were less than a million deer in North America. Today, there are nearly 30 million. New investigations into the lives of deer reveal a more complex society than previously imagined. Rated G. 2013.

This movie will be played with a described audio track and with captions- all are invited!

A deer hide and a set of antlers will be available for patrons to handle!

Saturday September 16, from 10:00 until 12:30, Nature hike of 2 & ½ miles of moderate trails led by County Parks Ranger, no cost, at Hartwood Acres. Meeting place is Hartwood Acres Mansion parking lot. The park entrance is off Saxonburg Blvd, 1.2 miles north of where Harts Run Rd crosses Saxonburg Blvd. Reserve by September 10, with Jeff Mulkern at 412-487-9469, veggie hoagies, water & iced tea will be provided for lunch.

Wednesday, September 20, 2017 1:00 PM–2:30 PM Tech Training

Need assistance with your smartphone or tablet? Join us for a hands-on tech training focusing on your devices accessibility options (voiceover/screen readers, magnification, enlarged fonts, etc). We can help with any operating system (iOS, Android), and any kind of device! Please bring your own device if you have one, if not, feel free to use one of ours!

Saturday, September 23, from 12:00 until 5:00, outdoor-indoor games party, no cost, at the home of Ray Jablonowski, 4551 Parade St., Pittsburgh PA 15207, reserve by Monday September 18 with Penny Fleckenstein at 412-415-3871. Ray is also making a massage chair available upstairs in a quiet room, where people can take turns using it.

PAST EVENTS

When the 50/50 raffle was held at the July 30 Gottschalk Swim Party, $93 worth of tickets were sold. As this raffle's winner, returning BOLD member Cyndy Johnson won $46.50. (What a welcome back present!)

The Fundraising Chair thanks not only everyone who supported BOLD by participating in this raffle but also Ray Jablonowski and his brother Bob and sister Cindy who made an excellent team cooking, Beth, Penny Fleckenstein's guest, and Sue Jeffreys, Peggy Walsh's guest, for their invaluable assistance selling tickets.

LOOKING AHEAD

Terri Winaught will be conducting an auction on Sunday, October 8 from 2 to 5 PM.
The venue is One Smithfield Street; Terri Winaught, 412-263-2022, is the
reservationist, and the deadline is Wednesday the 4th (10 PM).

As always, Terri is seeking donations, so let her know what item(s) you can contribute. Regarding donations, thank you in advance for checking the condition of your items to be sure that they are in good condition. If you need help doing that, let Terri know.

Possible event on November 4: Holiday shopping at Grove City, $15. We will ask you to bring a guide if possible. Please call reservationist Peggy 412-683-6070 as soon as possible, but no later than October 1 if you are interested so we can decide on the feasibility. We will charter a bus, going from Human Services if enough people are interested.

CULTURAL CONNECTIONS

Free tickets to some of the Lecture series. Starting now, as soon as you read this, call Jennifer Wilburn, 412-561-8155 to say which lectures you would like to attend. Jennifer will call back a week or 2 before the lecture if she has a ticket for you, and will mail it at that time. The choices are all on Wednesdays:

Jeffrey Toobin, Nov 1. He wrote book on the Supreme Court.

Jane Pauley, Nov 15. She did CBS Sunday morning, Today show, and Dateline.

Robin Wright, Jan 24, 2018. She is a fellow at the institute for peace, she wrote books on the Middle East.

Rich Steves, Feb 21, 2018. He does European travel guides.

Newt Gingrich, March 21, 2018. He was speaker of the House, ran for president.

Mark Kelly & Gaby Gifford, Apr 11, 2018. He was an astronaut, she was a congresswoman from AZ before stepping down to recover from a gunshot would.

Pittsburgh opera: “Tosca”, the opera up close is on Sunday Sept 24 at 2pm at the Opera headquarters, 2425 Liberty Av, Strip district, use 24th street entrance. BOLD BITS

The first Lutheran Center dinner, 535 N. Neville St, Oakland, will be at 5pm on Saturday Sept 30. Limit: 25 people who are blind or vision impaired. Sign up Sept 23 by 6pm at 412-682-1800.
