ALL ABOUT APRIL

Tammi's number is 412-488-6298; Joyce can be reached at 412-521-4385; and contact Mark at 412-386-6513.

Although the Camp Kon-o-Kwee weekend is in May, the sign-up deadline with Joyce Driben is Wednesday, April 16 by 10 pm. This is also the $60 payment deadline with Veronique Schreurs: 2269 Tilbury Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15217. The $60 check or money order is to be made out to Western PA BOLD. (As of this writing, 16 campers have signed up. If we don't get the minimum of 20 by the deadline, though, we will have to cancel this event.

To sign up for Indoor Games to be held on Tuesday the 22nd from 4 to 8 p.m., telephone Penny Fleckenstein at 412-415-3871by 10 p.m. on Friday the 18th. When reserving, let Penny know what game or snack you will bring. Penny will also give you her address at that time.

PAST EVENTS
When Mall Walking was held on February 19th, Joyce Driben reported that we had the largest attendance ever (more in Personal Perspective).

Ice Skating and attendance at cultural events continue to go well.

LOOKING AHEAD

May's and June's Board meetings will be held on Tuesdays the 6th of May and 3rdof June respectively. Our new location is still being researched, with the time remaining 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (The two possible locations are the South Side branch of the Carnegie Library, and the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children.) If a location isn't chosen at the April Board meeting, Veronique Schreurs has graciously offered to host May's meeting at her home in Squirrel Hill.

Regarding our pickup and drop-off location for the camping weekend, Pat Turner has arranged with Moorhead Towers to keep them as the location. To leave on Friday, May 9th, campers must arrive no later than 5:45 p.m. If anyone has not arrived when the bus is ready to leave, we will unfortunately have to go camping without him/her. The bus will leave camp on Sunday, May 11th between 11 and 11:30 am, with the anticipated arrival time in Pittsburgh being between 12:30 and 12:45 p.m, so feel free to schedule an Access for 1 or anytime after.

For first-time campers, bring a light jacket, heavy sweater or both since mornings and evenings get cool. A pair of long pants is also suggested and two pair of shoes due to possible muddy conditions if it has rained alot.

Since there is no nurse at camp, please bring all medications, including anything that counteracts something to which you are allergic. To repeat these reminders, Joyce Driben will call campers the week of this outing. This Editor will also post them on the Update Line: 1-773-597-4222, the week of May 9.

Final things to keep in mind are that there will be few, if any chairs at Moorhead, so you are encouraged to bring a folding chair, or anything else you might have, like a cane or walker with a seat. Also, due to remodeling, you are asked not to walk through the building or go to anyone's apartment. As for using bathrooms, there is a restroom in the lobby which will be unlocked. Finally, Moorhead now has a different main entrance, that new entrance being to the left of the old one. Upon entering, the intercom is still on the right.

The Thursdays in May and June for Ice Skating are the 1st, 15th, 5th, and 19th respectively. The Wednesdays in May and June for Mall Walking are the 7th, 21st, 4th, and 18th respectively.

To prepare for the Summer Rowing Season, the Three Rivers Rowing Association is offering free workouts on their rowing machines. Info? Joy Nix: 412-298-2315. You can also email joynix@threeriversrowing.org., and visit www.threeriversrowing.org for more info. (Some of BOLD'S excellent rowers are: Tom Burgunder, Nancy Leverett, Eugene Mariani, Marty Mathews, Jeff Mulkern, Tammi Swiantek, and Tobi Williams.)

Finally, the May 31st live auction and pizza social will be from 1 to 4 pm at the Human Services Building: 1 Smithfield Street, Downtown Pittsburgh. When arriving, you will need to sign in with the guard at the front desk, who can also direct you to the Liberty Room where this event will be. Persons taking Access will be dropped off at the rear entrance.

ADMINISTRATIVE ADD-Ons
Many thanks to the members who have renewed since March's newsletter. For the benefit of anyone who hasn't, make a $12 check or money order out to Western PA BOLD and send it to: 2269 Tilbury Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15217.

PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE
As indicated in Past Events, the February 19th Mall Walking event had the best attendance since its beginning.

"Twelve people attended Mall Walking on the 19th," Joyce Driben stated.

"As much as this activity is good exercise, it is just as much a social event," Joyce added. What makes this event so good for socializing is that some of us shop at the Mall and many of us eat lunch together, either at the mall's food court or a nearby restaurant in Monroeville. We also have a member who loves feeding my Seeing Eye dog some biscuits and having my dog lick his face," Joyce said.

Joyce concluded by sharing that many people at the Mall have come to recognize some of our walkers because of how often they have seen us.

If you've never thought Mall Walking could be so much fun, try it: You just might like it!

If you'd like to be interviewed for or write a Personal Perspective, phone 412-263-2022. (Future Personal Perspectives will include one in May's newsletter on the March 16th Indoor Games/ sing-along, and one in June's BOLD Ventures on Penny Fleckenstein's April 22nd game day.)
