BOLD VENTURES October 2023

Western Pennsylvania Blind Outdoor Leisure Development

Hello! The name for the month October comes from the Latin word for eight "octo." Before the Julian and Gregorian calendars came into use, the Roman calendar only had ten named months, and October was the 8th of them. In the later twelve-month calendars October became the tenth month, but its name never changed. Information from the Old Farmers' almanac website. Enjoy October!

Important Note: At BOLD's holiday party and general meeting in December,

Elections will be held for President, First Vice-President and Corresponding Secretary. If you are interested in being nominated for one of these positions, contact Jeff, the Chairperson of the nominating committee, by 8 pm Sunday October 15th at 412-487-9469 or going4walk@duck.com

BOLD BITS

Prayers and lots of get-well wishes go out to Penny Fleckenstein who recently had surgery

and is now in rehab.

BOLD prayers go out to Natasha Kinder who happily recently came home from the hospital.

There is some sad news. We recently found out that BOLD member Dr. Andrea Schwartz

passed away on June 30th. She was the former leader of the North Hills Friendship Group. We send condolences to her family and friends.

In case you did not see the email, we had other sad news about a former BOLD member.

Shirley Brand, former president of BOLD in the early to mid-1980s, passed away on August 25th. Shirley and her late husband Bill were avid downhill skiers and tandem bikers. Peggy Walsh, a current BOLD member, said of Shirley “It's been a long time since I've seen Shirley, but I remember her as a vibrant, cheerfully determined lady who loved skiing. No doubt in my mind, she was a top-notch BOLD President.”

My BOLD Take by Debby Hill

It was a real fall day with lots of sunshine cooler temperatures and a bit of a breeze. And what did 25 BOLD members do with that fine day, we went to a Pittsburgh Pirates' baseball game. Thanks to a wonderful anonymous gift, we had great seats in the 100 level, undercover at PNC Park, so there was no chance of getting too much of the fall sun. The Pirates beat the Washington Nationals 2 to 0 which made for a very quiet, quick game—the shortest game for the Pirates in 18 years. But we had fun visiting with BOLD friends, meeting new BOLD friends and eating good ball park food. Thanks to Ray and Cyndee Jablonowski for their many trips to get food and drink and other special sighted assistance! All in all a good BOLD day!

Happy October Birthday to:

Dan Cornell, Norma Caquatto, Cindy Flerman, Mark Grasak, Jim Musto, Kimberly Smythe and anyone else celebrating an October birthday!
