AWESOME EVENTS IN AUGUST

The meeting place for Waterskiing on Sunday, August 24 is the Steel City Rowing Club Boathouse: 100 Arch Street, Verona, PA 15147. The sponsoring organization is the Golden Triangle Waterski Club; the reservationist is Ed Reid, 443-994-3038, and the deadline is Sunday, August 17th by 10 PM. You can also sign up via E-mail: happyhermit@gmail.com The Ski Club will provide a main dish and attendees are asked to bring sides to share. Closer to the event date, the main dish will be posted on the Update Line: 1-773-597-4222.

August's Board meeting will be on Tuesday the 5th; Mall Walking will be on Wednesdays the 6th and 20th; Ice Skating will not be held this month; Rowing will end on the last Thursday in August; and Dragon Boating will end on the last Saturday of this month. Anyone who has attended at least half of the rowing sessions and wants a reimbursement of half of his/her rowing fee is asked to phone Tammi Swiantek: 412-488-6298.

A new event for BOLD is a Gateway Clipper cruise and buffet picnic lunch on Saturday August the 30th from noon until 2 PM. with Boarding beginning at 11 AM. The reservationist is Penny Fleckenstein, 412-415-3871; the sign-up deadline is Sunday August the 10th by 10 PM; and the $25 per person gets mailed to Veronique Schreurs: 2269 Tilbury Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15217, the check or money order made payable to Western PA BOLD.

Since the ideal ratio of blind to sighted picnickers is one to one, we need more sighted helpers and warmly thank those who have already reserved. This Editor also thanks the Friendship Group with whom BOLD will be collaborating on this event.

To ask if yoga classes are continuing, call Veronique Schreurs: 412-225-4038.

PAST EVENTS

Attendance at Mall Walking remains steady, and there were no cultural events in July.

When the Gottschalk Swim Party/picnic was held on July 27th, there were 23 BOLD members and 8 guests for a total of 31 attendees. Many thanks to Leslie Gottschalk and her family for so graciously hosting this popular annual event; Missy Folmer for helping with rides; and the many volunteers who cooked and served the food.

Though outings to Kennywood and a Pittsburgh Pirates game were discussed, these events were not scheduled.

LOOKING AHEAD

September's Board meeting will be on Tuesday the 2nd; Ray Jablonowski will host Indoor Games at his Greenfield home either the first or second Saturday in September; and Joyce Driben, 412-521-4385, will remain the contact person to get tickets for Chamber Music Society and Pittsburgh Symphony concerts. (See September's BOLD Ventures for the dates of October's Board meeting, November's Board meeting, and the October auction.)

BOLD BITS

The Pittsburgh Lutheran Center for the Blind will host their annual ice cream social on Sunday, August 3rd after 11 AM services. In addition to a variety of ice creams and toppings, there will also be hot dogs and sides. To let Sherri Crum know you will attend, phone 412-682-1800 by 6 PM Thursday, July 31st.

Warm Wishes for a rapid recovery to Bruce Leverett who had a stroke on July 18th, and congratulations to longtime BOLD member Marcy Schott who was married on Friday, July 18th. (This editor loved seeing Marcy and meeting her husband, Leonard, at the Gottschalk Swim Party.)

Always awesome Ceinwen King-Smith has been teaching English as a Second Language classes in Honduras this summer. Ceinwen told this Editor that some days have been so hot that 90 degrees was the low, which had Hondurans who are acclimated to such heat complaining.

Happy Birthday to Leslie Gottschalk, Bonnie Granger, Ryan Leverett, Marty Mathews, Debi Sterling, and anyone else with an August birthday.

If you have a BOLD Bit, bring it to a Board meeting; phone Terri Winaught at 412-263-2022; or email twinaught@verizon.net Also feel free to use this contact information to give Terri newsletter feedback (so far, this Editor has heard from one person who didn't like the format of June's newsletter, and another who suggested underlining event dates in the calendar starting with this issue.
