PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE by Maggi Ostrowski

On May 15th, Gia Cacalano hosted four BOLD members for an embodied dance/workshop at the GRW Dance Studio of Point Park University.  Gia defines dance as any movement.  She believes that even breathing is dance so we started with breathing exercises to relax and start to feel into our bodies.  We continued our warm up while sitting in a chair and doing movement improvisations of our head and limbs.  Gia introduced the concepts of feeling our movements as if they were influenced by the Earth's rhythm, wind, water and fire/electricity.  Gia had sound tracks for each of these elements, aiding in our improvisations.  The workshop culminated in a simple, structured dance sequence accompanied by the appropriate Stevie Wonder song, "Higher Ground".  I enjoyed this workshop and gained a new perspective of the body, the human spirit and the importance of relationships.
