Western Pennsylvania Blind Outdoor Leisure Development

It's August, and here we are at the dog days of summer—named after the rise and fall during this time of year of Sirius, the dog star. But for BOLD these dog days are not lazy dog days. There's lots to do this month as you can see in this edition of BOLD Ventures! Happy August!

 CALENDAR

August

Tuesday, August 1st, from 6 to 8 pm, Board Meeting in-person at Human Services, 

1 Smithfield St, downtown. Any non-board Members who want to attend must call Nancy at 412-561-3972 by July 30th.

Wednesdays, August 2nd and 23nd, from 7 to 9:30 pm SE Wisconsin virtual bingo,

via Zoom or phone. Join Zoom Meeting with the Zoom App on your computer or smart device.

To sign-up to play, contact Lion Ray Tweedale at (262) 224-5517 and provide the numbers of your bingo card. Only one card can be played per person, and your card must be registered with Ray. If WPA BOLD members win any of the cash prizes, the funds will go to WPA BOLD as a donation. Ray will be on at 6:30 pm Eastern for anyone who wants to be sure they can get in or would like to provide the numbers for their card. HAVE FUN AND GOOD LUCK!

Saturdays, July 29th through September 2nd, noon to 1:30, Blind/Visually Impaired Tennis

with the Highland Park Tennis Club, 6701 Stanton Avenue, Pittsburgh, 15206. Note: this is a location change. If you'd like to try tennis, or you haven't played yet this year, please email Jen Roth jkroth@carlow.edu.  

Sunday August 6th, starting at 8:30 am, Water Skiing with the Golden Triangle Water Ski

Club and members of Three Rivers Adaptive Sports. We will meet at the Steel City Rowing Club boathouse, 100 Arch St, Verona, 15147, for a short boat ride to the island in the Allegheny River where the water skiing will take place. There is no charge. There will be a lunch of burgers and dogs. Sign up by Monday, July 31st by 8 pm with Nancy at 412-561-3972.   

Thursday, August 10th, 11 am to 1 pm, Braddock Farm tour and lunch

Braddock Farm, 1000 Braddock Ave, Braddock, PA 15104. Cost is $10 for the tour and a pizza lunch. The event is rain or shine. We will be outdoors, so be sure to dress for the weather. There is parking available. There is a bus stop for 61b at 9th and Braddock, one block from the farm. Signup with Carol by 8 pm Monday the 7th at 484-318-9145.

Tuesday, August 15th. On the afternoon of September 14th, BOLD is going to the

Pittsburgh Pirates versus the Washington Nationals baseball game. Although the event is in September, we need your signup by August 15th. See all of the information in the September listings.

Tuesdays, August 15th and 29th, in the morning.

Mall Walking at the Monroeville Mall. Cost is free. Lunch is on your own at the food court. Sighted guides are welcome. For all of the details including transportation and to sign up call Joyce at 412-521-4385. For the August 15th walk call Joyce by 9 pm Tuesday the 8th. To walk on the 29th, call Joyce by 9 pm Tuesday the 22nd.

Sunday August 27, 9:30 am to 1:30 pm, tandem biking, Montour Trail,

Tandem Connection Bicycle Shop, 5 Georgetown Road, Canonsburg, 15317. There is no charge for the ride and a pizza and wings lunch. Sighted captains contact Scotto at scottog@yahoo.com. September

Friday September 8th, 6 to 8 pm, skateboarding at an indoor park,

Switch and Signal, 7518 Dickson St, Swissvale, PA, 15218, no charge. Helmets, protective equipment and skateboards provided, with one-on-one assistance. Stay tuned for the September BOLD Ventures for more information and to sign up.

Thursday, September 14th, noon to 4, Baseball game, Pittsburgh Pirates

versus the Washington Nationals, PNC Park, 115 Federal Street, 15212. Cost is free for the ticket, but food is on your own. Seats are undercover in the 100 level. Come join BOLD for an afternoon of fun baseball in one of the best ball parks in all of baseball. To reserve your seat call Debby by 8 pm Tuesday, August 15th at 412-742-4288 or dm-hill@comcast.net.

BOLD BITS

Many bouquets of get well wishes go out to Tina Wassermann! Recently she had a too long stay in the hospital. She is now in rehab at Oakmont. We hope you will be at home with Joe really soon!
 
Congratulations to our BOLD champion rowers! Three BOLD rowers attended a rowing regatta in Washington DC. They all placed in the race: Tammi Swiantek finished fifth, Maggi Ostrowski finished fourth and Alycia Barras finished third! Good going, or is that rowing!
